It is with great pleasure that I am able to announce that Dr. Ali Navabi will begin in the role of the Grain Farmers of Ontario Professorship in Wheat Breeding in our department on May 1, 2014.
The position is supported by the Grain Farmers of Ontario and SeCan and will focus on research to advance plant breeding methodology and practice and creating novel wheat varieties with enhanced productivity, disease resistance, pest resistance enhanced quality and utility in crop rotation systems in Ontario.
Ali has been an Agriculture Agri-Food Canada scientist located in our department as the bean breeder in the joint AAFC/University of Guelph Bean Breeding Program since 2008.
Ali brings a great deal of experience in plant breeding and genetics to the new position, including 15 years in wheat breeding. He has been an active advisor of grad students through his affiliation with our department and has contributed to graduate teaching. Ali has been very successful in attracting support to his research programs and is currently the editor of the Canadian J of Plant Science.
I am excited to have such an accomplished scientist and collaborator take on a new role in our Department as a colleague.
