PhD Graduate Research Position Available
A PhD graduate research assistantship (GRA) is available with Dr. Jay Subramanian’s Stone Fruit Research lab starting Summer 2026. The project will be to characterize the PpYUC11 gene that confers flesh firmness in melting flesh peaches. The incumbent will work closely with an existing PhD student to further characterize the PpYUC11 gene in a small heterogeneous population that exhibit this trait. The work will involve an in depth in silico analyses using the peach genome, identify the variation in and around the PpYUC11 gene and correlate the variation with other phenotypic traits that are typical of the genotypes exhibiting the PpYUC11 gene. Some genetic transformation work may be required to confirm the gene, gene expression analyses and some imaging. The candidate will be encouraged to explore other topics related to this gene.
The ideal GRA will need to have the following skills and requirements:
- Primarily aimed at Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
- Have a G2 driver’s licence so they are able to drive to the substation where the research facilities are located.
- Have an undergraduate or master’s degree in horticulture/agriculture/plant sciences with basic knowledge of tree fruits and genomics. Preference will be given to students with a background in Horticulture.
- Have relevant research experience at the undergrad and master’s level. Publications will be considered a valuable addition to the CV.
- Have basic to good statistic/bioinformatic skills and the ability to work both in field and lab settings
- Have good independent written and oral communication skills including the ability to translate knowledge to producer groups. (Should be able to filter this gene language to common farmers)
- Should be able to work with other PhD students and postdocs working in the program.

Incumbent will get the standard, department prescribed GRA and will be eligible to apply for many other departmental bursaries, annually. The incumbent will be encouraged to apply for Graduate Teaching Assistantships as well.
