University of Guelph Weeds Team Success at the 2025 North Eastern Collegiate Weed Contest
Overview:
On July 29, twenty-one University of Guelph students went to Bridgeton, New Jersey, to take part in the Northeastern Collegiate Weed Contest. They were met by students from Cornell University, Virginia Tech, Penn State, and North Carolina State University. Graduate and undergraduate students have to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in five events: weed identification herbicide symptomology identification, practical weed control problem solving, application technology mathematics and sprayer calibration. From April to July, students studied and practiced during six evening sessions on the Guelph Campus and one field day at the Elora Station. All that hard work paid off, and aside from acquiring new knowledge and improving their skills, Guelph student performed very well. At the undergrad, the Guelph Team 2 (Dani Vogels, Peyton Nailor, Max Van Den Borre, Ben Fluttert) placed first while Guelph Team 1 (Colby Older, Jill Hamm, Jill Ohm and Ian Lawton) took third place. At the individual level, Kiara Driscoll was first, Ben Fluttert second and Dani Vogels third. The University of Guelph Weeds Team was coached by François Tardif, Peter Smith, Isabelle Aicklen, John Fluttert, and Robert Moloney. We are grateful for the financial support of multiple donors who have supported h team over the years and made this incredible learning experience possible: the OAC Alumni Foundation through the OAC Learning Trust, Mr. Peter Johnson, the Grain Farmers of Ontario, BASF Agricultural Solutions Canada, Bayer Crop Science Canada, Syngenta Canada, Nufarm Canada, Corteva Agriscience, FMC Canada and Valent Canada
