ABSTRACT
Adzuki is a high-value Asian legume crop grown in Ontario for export to Japan. Improvements to seed quality traits are needed to increase Ontario adzuki production and profitability. This research investigates the genetic control of seed quality and agronomic characteristics in adzuki beans that increase their production suitability in Ontario. A bi-parental F3 mapping population of 84 genotypes was created from a cross between ‘Erimo’ and ‘Baoqing’ adzuki varieties. Phenotypic data was collected from the F3:F4 population, and the lines were genotyped using GBS to identify 275 high-quality SNPs. These markers were used to create a linkage map of 10 LGs (1,254 cM) and identify loci associated with agronomic traits related to the improvement of adzuki bean quality. Seven QTL were identified, two relating to colourimetric attributes, four to seed size traits, and one to plant architecture. Preliminary analysis identified candidate genes for each trait.
