A course about the culture and maintenance of trees in turfgrass related urban landscapes, providing students with both the principles and practices of tree care. Case studies will help students develop the skills necessary to diagnose tree problems.

Learning outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
  1. Identify native trees in Canada through the use of a dichotomous identification guide in both summer and winter (leafless condition).
  2. Identify normal patterns of development of trees and identify how environmental stresses and changes in the biological or ecological function of the landscape influence development.
  3. Identify signs and symptoms of biotic (insect, disease) and abiotic (physical, chemical) stressors and make appropriate decisions on remedial action to enhance the long term viability of landscape plants.
  4. Analyze tree structure and identify appropriate actions to enhance tree health and mitigate risk.
  5. Develop a comprehensive management plan for the long term care of trees within a defined urban setting (e.g. a golf course).
  6. Critically assess the value of information derived from various sources based on a set of criteria.

Lecture Content:

  • Parts of a tree (structure and function)
  • Tree development
  • Soil, climate and site
  • Site specific plant selection
  • Planting methods
  • Site modification and soil maintenance
  • Pruning of trees and shrubs
  • Pest identification and management
  • Abiotic problems
  • Nutrient management
  • Hazard analysis and risk assessment
  • Preventive maintenance and tree repair/support
Labs & Seminars:

Labs consist of a weekly 3 hour walk around different parts of the campus. The focus of each lab is to reinforce information provided in weekly lectures.

Assignments are due on the dates listed above.  Late assignments will be assessed a penalty of 5% per day past the due date unless there are extenuating circumstances supported by appropriate documentation.  Students are encouraged to submit assignments electronically.

Students are encouraged to work collaboratively and share information, ideas and resources.  However, all work submitted for grading must be original and submitted by individual students.
