This course focuses on the identification and adaptation of annual, biennial, herbaceous perennial and indoor plants. Lectures will be integrated with outdoor laboratory activities to emphasize use of plant groups in park, perennial border, general landscape, botanic garden and interior scape settings.  Case studies will be used throughout the course to illustrate special plant use applications and to foster discussion.

Specific Learning Outcomes:

After the successful completion of the course students will:

  1. Be able to recognize and identify many commonly used annual, perennial and indoor plant species.
  2. Be able to identify the plant families that are economically important to ornamental horticulture in Ontario.
  3. Have a basic understanding of the growth requirements, plant maintenance and landscape applications of the plants studied in the course.
  4. Be able to evaluate a planting site and identify suitable plants for the site.
  5. Be able to critically evaluate ornamental plantings in the context of the greater physical environment (i.e. pollinator friendliness, potential for invasiveness).
  6. Have had direct experience handling and installing a selection of the plant material studied in the course in a campus location.

The labs will be used to introduce the students to specific plant species found in the gardens on campus and elsewhere and to learn how to quickly identify these plants.  On certain Fridays, the combined lecture/lab time slots may be used to accommodate touring campus gardens, the RBG tour and the landscape installation.

Grading Polices

All exams are due on dates indicated unless other arrangements are made ahead of time. 10% mark will be reduced for each day of late submission for assignments. All submissions will be made by email as word files attachment.

Course Policy on Group Work:

All students are expected to contribute to group projects equally.  A common grade will be given to all members of the group for the project.
