25 Years of Service to the University of Guelph

Each year at the President's Community Breakfast, the university recognizes staff and faculty who have provided 25 years of service to the UofG. Plant Agriculture salutes Steve Bowley, Ann Clark, Dave Kells, K. Peter Pauls, Mike Peppard, Angie Trivett and Rick Upfold for surpassing this milestone in 2008.

 

Steve Bowley

Associate Professor

Steve received his BSc. and MSc. from the University of Guelph, before heading off to Kentucky for his PhD. His research area is the genetic improvement and variety evaluation of perennial forage crops with particular emphasis on the application of biotechnology to improve persistence, stress tolerance, and quality. Steve has been a member of the University's Business Development Office since 2000 with the additional responsibilities of protection of Plant Germplasm Intellectual Property. Steve is also the department's resident "stats" expert.

 


E. Ann ClarkAnn Clark

Associate Professor

Ann came to Guelph as a faculty member in the former Crop Science Department researching forages, with a focus on pasture and grazing management. Over the past decade Ann has focused on the concerns of environmental risks posed by GM crops and expanded her research into the area of organic agriculture. Ann places considerable efforts in the area of undergrad teaching.


Dave KellsDave Kells

Elora Research Station Manager

Dave over sees the day to day running of the crop research facilities of the Elora Research station. Prior to Elora Dave was the station manager at the Woodstock Research Station. These stations were formerly under the department of Crop Science/ Plant Agriculture and are now affiliated with the Office of Research.


K. Peter PaulsK. Peter Pauls

Professor

Peter joined Crop Science as faculty with a research focus on the development and application of tissue culture and molecular biology techniques for crop improvement. More recently he has also supervised the field bean breeding program and joined the office of OAC as Acting Associate Dean (Academic).


Mike PeppardMike Peppard

Web/IT Technician

Mike received his BSc. (agr) from Crop Science and for almost 20 years was a field research technician working in various research programs. Recent duties have been IT support for the Bovey building and the department web site. On a campus note, Mike was coach of the womens varsity hockey team for two seasons in the mid 1980's.


Angie TrivettAngie Trivett

Secretary/Clerk

Angie joined Crop Science as secretarial support. Later moving to the Bovey building to continue those duties with additional responsibilities of purchasing clerk when Plant Agriculture was formed. Angie is this years Suzanne Sprowl award winner.


Rick UpfoldRick Upfold

Associate Professor

Rick joined Crop Science as an extension specialist providing support to the farming community. With Plant Agriculture Rick was manager of the research stations and is a lecturer focusing on general crop production. Rick was awarded the Friendship Medal by the Government of China in 1995 for contributions to wheat production in China. The Friendship Medal is the country's highest honor given to foreign researchers.

 


Julia Zilka

Research Assistant

Julia worked in the soybean breeding program most recently with Dr. Istvan Rajcan. She started in Crop Science with Dr. Wally Beversdorf then had worked with Drs. J. Tanner, B. Luzzi, T. Michaels. She has assisted in the development of numerous OAC soybean varieties with her expertise was in the area of plant pathology. In late August Julia retired, we wish her well in her retirement years.

Technician

30 Year Honours go out to Jan Brazlot, a lab research technician with Dr. Peter Pauls.
