2006 Achillea Notes (4" finished plants, field planted at 12" spacing): This was a unique entry in the trial; no comparisons were available. Gypsy White had its best bloom performance in early to mid-summer. After a flush of bloom, deadheading appears to be needed to clean up the canopy. When not blooming, it displayed healthy foliage that appeared to be disease free throughout the growing season. The plant showed moderate vigour with the canopy filling in by the middle of July.

2006 Trailing Antirrhinum Notes (4" finished plants, field planted at 18" spacing): The 2006 trial of trailing snapdragons ultimately involved exposing the snapdragons to high soil moisture levels. High rainfall and a tile drain failure, at times caused the snapdragon trial to flood for short periods of time. As a result, a number of the cultivars succumbed to root rot.The survivors were evaluated for seasonal bloom response.

2006 Begonia Notes (50 cell tray finished plants, field planted at 12" spacing):The overall performance of the fibrous begonias grown in the full sun of the trial garden was very good this year; perhaps the overcast days and wetter 2006 summer contributed to this excellent growth. Plant growth and bloom continued well up until frost. By far the most compact cultivars were in the 'Sprint' series; both Blush and Scarlet were reliable bloomers. The dark-leaved 'Nightlife' series had a compact growth habit, resembling that of 'Sprint' but did not have the same full sun bloom performance. 'Inferno', 'Stara Mix' and 'BabyWing White' were the most vigorous of the begonias with 'BabyWing White' growing the fastest. The 'Stara Mix' growth rate was colour dependent with the dark leaved red cultivar being noticeably slower growing than the green-leaved pink cultivar. The 'Emperor' series was vigorous but had a more compact habit than the 'Inferno' series.

Of the two colours, the yellow provided the best flower show. 'Flambe Yellow' has greyer foliage than 'Flambe Orange'. Both cultivars have a trailing habit making them suitable for ground cover and container use. The excellent summer bloom performance was followed by excellent cold tolerance. These plants were still blooming after a killing frost.

2006 Cleome Notes (4" finished plants, field planted at 12" spacing): All five of the cleome entries bloomed well throughout the season. Of the five, 'Sparkler Blush' was the only seed propagated entry, the rest were started from cuttings. The 'Spirit' and 'Sparkler 'series had similar bloom size and plant height. Senorita Rosalita was more heavily branched than the other cultivars but with much smaller inflorescences; the leaves stayed on this cultivar well into the fall, while others had lost their leaves.

2006 Dwarf Delphinium Notes (50 cell tray finished plants, field planted at 12" spacing):This series of short delphiniums suits pot culture and will bloom (and look proportional) in a four inch pot. In our experience it did not produce much basal foliage when planted in the field but a 'Mistral Sky and Blue' bloomed well in spite of this. The wet field conditions in 2006 resulting from record rainfall levels caused many of the Mistral Snow plants to die.

2006 Erysiumum Notes (50 cell tray finished plants, field planted at 12" spacing): The English wallflower is a cold tolerant ornamental from the mustard family. The 'Citrona' and 'Treasure' series were entries for 2006 while the older 'Charity' series was planted as a comparison. 'Citrona' bloomed well in packs and during the summer heat and was still blooming well in November. The two 'Treasure' cultivars were well branched with bushy dark green foliage but did not start to bloom until September. Many buds were visible in the early fall but they did not open in a flush of bloom before the gardens were plowed under in late November.

2006 Impatiens Notes (105 ellepot and 4" finished plants, field planted at 12" spacing): This particular category was a catch all for miniature and exotic hybrids of impatiens. The Ball FloraPlant material was planted directly into the field from 105 ellepots and was therefore later to establish and bloom than the other entries that were finished in 4" pots. All of these plants were grown under 50% shade cloth. The climate and wet field conditions were not conducive for a dramatic floral show in 2006 but the greenhouse 4" pot performance was very compact and full of bloom.

2006 Lantana Notes (105 ellepot and 4" finished plants, field planted at 12" spacing): The hot pink/yellow and cherry/yellow bicolor entries from GoldFisch had very even growth in the gardens and had an excellent branching habit but did not bloom as freely as the BallFloraPlant entries. The Ball FloraPlant material was planted directly into the field from 105 ellepots and was therefore later to establish and bloom than the other entries that were finished in 4" pots.

2006 Linaria Notes (50 cell tray finished plants, field planted at 12" spacing): This short purple/yellow flowered ground cover looked very good in pots and in the garden once the canopy had filled in. We observed two flushes of bloom, one in June and the second in August. Perhaps there would have been more if we had deadheaded the plot.

2006 Nemesia Notes (4" finished plants for Fides and Proven Winners, 50 tray for PAS and 105 ellepots for BallFloraPlant, field planted at 12" spacing): The Fides 'Angelart' entries were unique in there colour range (cream to red). 'Angelart' looked fantastic in pots on the greenhouse bench but some of the cultivars didn't do well in the summer field heat. 'Aromatica White and Deep Blue Imp.' showed excellent summer heat bloom performance.

2006 Osteospermum Notes (4" finished plants, field planted at 12" spacing): Summer bloom performance is the focus for selection with this group of plants by breeders. None of the plants in this trial werre deadheaded. Even so, there were examples of acceptable summer bloom performance. Apart from one plant succombing to the sclerotinia disease, no disease was evident on these plants.

2006 Ivy-Type Pelargonium Notes (4.5" finished plants, field planted at 18" spacing): It has been my experience that ivy geraniums in ground beds do not perform as well as they do in containers. The main part of the problem is Guelph's high soil and water pH and the subsequent iron deficiency symptoms that soon appear after planting in the garden. This trial therefore subjected the ivy geraniums to less than optimal growing conditions. The ratings should be intepreted with that in mind.

2006 Zonal-Type Pelargonium Notes (4.5" finished plants, field planted at 12" spacing):This group of plants was transplanted into the garden from 4.5" pots at spacings of 12". All entries in the this group were propagated vegetatively except for the 'Maverick Scarlet Eye' from Goldsmith Seeds. Due to a late seeding date this entry was not mature enough to bloom in pots; mid and late season garden performance was good though. Most of the heaviest and consistent bloomers had ratings of 3.9 and greater; that's 27 of the 62 entries. Cultivars such as 'Crystal Palace Gem' and 'Happy Thought' have colourful variegated foliage that remain attractive in the landscape in in spite of low temperature bloom suppression in the fall. In the 2006 trials, the fastest canopy fill ws observed with 'Eclipse Red III', 'Crystal Palace Gem', 'Pinnacel Red' and 'Survivor Salmon, Coral, Dk. Red Imp., Hot Pink and Cherry Red'. The most compact growers (not having filled in the canopy by late August) were 'Summer Idol Red and Lilac w/Eye', 'Eclipse Scarlet and White', 'Graffiti Double White', 'Pinnacle Hot Rose, Violet Rose and Neon Rose'.

2006 Trailing Petunia Notes (4" finished plants, field planted at 18" spacing): The cultivars in this group of trailing petunias was positioned together in the trial because of their larger bloom habit (>1.5" diameter flowers). The vigour and consistency of bloom throughout the summer varied between the cultivars. While most entries provided acceptable garden performance, those receiving season average ratings over 4.1 generally gave exceptional season-long vegetative growth and bloom performance. Wet conditions for part of the summer contributed to severe botrytis speck on some of the trailing petunia cultivars and this of course reduced the overall bloom show of that cultivar.

2006 Phlox Notes (4" finished plants, field planted at 18" spacing): Early season wet field conditions prevented the 'Intensia' series of phlox from establishing as strongly as it has in previous years. New colours in the series for 2006 were 'Pink' and 'Star Brite'. All colours bloomed best late in the 2006 season and showed excellent cool temperature performance.

2006 Scabiosa Notes: Originally planted as part of the 2005 GTG evaluations, 5 of these plants were left to overwinter in the trial garden. All 5 survived the winter and bloomed repeatedly throughout the 2006 season although the best flower show was in June.

2006 Marigold Notes (50 cell tray finished plants, field planted at 12" spacing): Both of these entries are from S&G Flowers (Syngenta) and both showed cyclical bloom performance through the summer and bloomed well into the fall. Large, well-formed flower heads and well branched bushy plants made for a very attractive garden display. This plot was deadheaded twice during the summer.

2006 Vegetative Verbena Notes (105 ellepots and 4" finished plants, field planted at 18" spacing):The abilitity to bloom during summer heat and tolerance to powdery mildew are two main considerations when choosing verbena cultivars. The verbena entries in this trial were not significantly affected by powdery mildew until late September. The top 6 ranked verbena in this trial had very good summer bloom production. It should be noted that the 3 Ball FloraPlant verbena entries in this trial were planted directly into the ground from 105 ellepots; as a result they initially further behind the other plants that were finished in 4" pots.

2006 Viola Notes: Bloom performance under summer heat has improved greatly with new viola cultivars; most of these entries did well for summer bloom. 'Sorbet Blue Babyface' and the entries from the 'Nature' series were the most compact of the group. 'Frosty Rain' had the most sprawling growth habit. Both the 'Sorbet' series and 'Frosty Rain' were showing powdery mildew infections by late August.

2006 Zinnia Notes (50 cell tray finished plants, field planted at 12" spacing): The zinnia cultivars in this trial are all Zinnia elegans types but can be grouped into 3 size categories. The long stems of cultivars 'Uproar Rose' (28-36")and the bicolor AAS winner, 'Zowie Yellow Flame' (24-30")can be used as cutflowers as well for garden enjoyment. The well branched, compact 'Magellan' series is the shortest of the group with garden heights of 12-14". Also well branched, the 'Zesty' series from Ball Seed is slightly taller at 18-24". The ratings represent how freely blooming these entries were; three cultivars of Magellan led the pack with exceptional bloom performance. For powdery mildew resistance, Uproar Rose led the way.
