SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANTS IN TREE FRUIT PHYSIOLOGY/POMOLOGY - SIMCOE
Job Title: Research Assistant - Horticulture
Period: Approximately May 2 – Sept 2, 2011 (19 weeks)

Education: Enrolled in College Degree in Horticulture, BSc(Agr) or BSc. (preferred), with an emphasis in agriculture.
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Rate: Commensurate with experience
Description
The Department of Plant Agriculture, Simcoe Campus is now accepting applications for a research assistant to conduct research-related tasks in the tree fruit physiology research programme based at its research facility in Simcoe. This research program involves projects in pruning and tree canopy management, tree training systems, rootstock and cultivar evaluation and methods to control tree growth and cropping.
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining plots, collecting and analyzing data, and taking growth and yield measurements. Computer spreadsheet and word processing skills are an asset.

GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP (GRA) - TREE FRUIT PHYSIOLOGY/POMOLOGY
The Department of Pant Agriculture periodicalyl seeks applicants to fill a GRA position at the MSc or PhD level in tree fruit research.
Qualifications include a BSc. or MSc in a horticulture, botany, plant biology, plant physiology, or soil science-related areas. Coursework or experience in Pomology/tree fruit physiology an asset. An annual stipend of $16,500 (MSc) or $19,000 (PhD) will be provided for 2 or 3 years, respectively. To qualify, students must demonstrate that a first-class (grade of “A”) academic standing was achieved during the last two completed years of study in addition to the admission requirements of the University (see link below).
The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, creative and willing to work in the general areas associated with tree fruits (cherry/peach/apple/plum) including, but not limited to, crop load management, rootstock physiology, water relations, plant bio-regulators, irrigation, physiology of rain-induced fruit cracking, or soil management. The student will need to travel to the University of Guelph and satellite campus(es) to pursue course work and conduct field/laboratory research as required by their project.
