Research Area
Plant Molecular Genetics
Dr. Strommer joined the faculty at the University of Guelph in 1989. Research in the Strommer laboratory since then has evolved from a focus on fundamental molecular biological studies (genome organization and gene function) to more applied issues, approached from the perspective of a molecular biologist, but spreading into analytical chemistry and physiology. The two current research programs centre on plant-based edible vaccine development and the production of anthocyanin pigments in grapes. Vaccine work is centred in the lab and greenhouse of the Bovey Building, on the west side of the University of Guelph campus; grape work is split between the Bovey lab and vineyards in the Niagara region, about 100 km to the south. Most of the lab's research is collaborative, involving interactions with other faculty on and off campus, scientists from Agriculture Canada, and commercial wineries.
