TOWNHALL DISCUSSION in support of the
ORGANIC AGRICULTURE MAJOR

Nov. 18th, 2009 5:30pm, Crop Science Building Room 202.
On Wednesday, Nov. 18th there will be a Townhall discussion held for the organic agriculture major. This will offer an opportunity for students, faculty, and the public to engage in conversation about the future of the BSc.Agr in Organic major. There are many questions to ask and I am hopeful that we will leave with a better understanding of what needs to be done next in order to keep this major in existence. For those who are unaware, there were three stipulations set out during Senate last April: increase enrollment, gain (industry) funding, and find qualified people to replace Ann Clark after her retirement in 2011. In April, this will once again go to Senate, and our hope is that solutions will be found in order to keep the organic agriculture major in Guelph.

If you are unable to attend but would like to propose a question, please email Erin Carlson at carlsone@uoguelph.ca .

Battling against poverty and malnutrition in the developing world

Oct. 7,2009; 4pm, Thornborough 1307
Dr. JDH (Dyno) Keatinge, Director-General of the World Vegetable Center (AVRDC), will present a seminar on the severe effects of dietary malnutrition.

The severe effects of dietary malnutrition that are being experienced worldwide have their most damaging effects in areas such as sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia where more than a billion people are either food or nutritionally insecure or both. Extreme cases can be observed in many Sahelian countries in west Africa where disadvantaged communities are frequently experiencing periods in the year when they are consuming much less than 50% of their vitamin needs from fruit and vegetables. Diversifying diets and agricultural enterprises with fruit and vegetables is a potent weapon in the current global battle against malnutrition and poverty. Agricultural science can contribute substantially to enhance the development prospects and health of not only disadvantaged and vulnerable individuals at one end of the spectrum but also the growth and equity of national economies at the other. Moreover, with relatively simple applied research, new crop species and technolog! ies can rapidly enter the development pathway to benefit even the poorest people or nations. More upstream research can help to guard vegetable production against the vagaries of potential climatic uncertainty which is projected to become more prominent over future decades. However, historical and continuing widespread underinvestment in vegetable research and development from the national to the global level may severely compromise the world’s ability to use such high value species for crop diversification and as a major engine of development growth to ensure global food and nutritional security.
