Course Objectives

Weeds are plants that are growing where they are not wanted. In this course we will aim at understanding the biology of weeds, so as to manage them better. Specific objectives are:

  1. Develop a basic understanding of the principles of weed science.
    1. Weed biology
    2. Prevention eradication and management
  2. Understand the importance of weed ecology in relation to the components of integrated weed management systems.
    1. Life cycles
    2. The importance of ecological selection
    3. Weed reproduction and invasiveness
    4. Interference: components and outcome
  3. Know the main methods of weed control
    1. How they work
    2. What influences their efficacy
  4. Develop a good understanding of the activity, selectivity, behaviour and fate of herbicides in plants and environment.
  5. Be able to identify common weed species.
  6. Learn how to identify unknown weed species.
  7. Be able to correctly diagnose herbicide injury.

Prerequisites

AGR*2451/2 or AGR*2470

Method of Course Presentation

Notes and presentations will be posted on D2L prior to class.  Discussions will be strongly encouraged.  There will be opportunities for students to work in teams and share their learning with the class… Labs will be hands-on and focusing on weed ID and herbicide physiology.
